In my experience, it created more pressure and I had better results. A great separator are gatoraide bottles. They are made of very solid plastic and have nice sized caps.

I use 4 bottles on my 55G, 2 bottles diffusing at each end of the tank. Limewood airstones work great for diffusing DIY c02, the ones I use are made by coralife
