Mix a 1/4 tsp of yeast with a tsp of flour and about a 1/4 cup of tepid water. In an hour or so it should bubble up if the yeast is good.

I do think it has a lot to do with the type of rock. I'm just not sure you wouldn't have problems with rocks that were say high in calcium. So I can't say what kind of rock might work.
