I used tinfoil for a couple of old lights when I was younger. Worked fine for low light plants. Of course those were 20 longs and a 29 tall. Should work for your application, only way to find out...

If you mean nipping on shrimp, they don't nip. They gobble. I feed "George the guppy slayer" ghost shrimp occasionally and they aren't exactly tiny. But, he will hunt them down in the tank....

you can always soak the wood to release the tannins. if that is all you want to do, the bath tub works well. Just fill it up with as hot of water as possible, let soak for 1-2 hours, drain, repeat....
