+1 on the plastic craft mesh, it's easy to cut and shape and is perfect for keeping shrimp out of filters, I use it in multiple tanks. It's about $2 for an 8x11 sheet at Michaels.

You are correct ua...it prefers damp soil, but unfortunately is not aquatic. You should remove it before it dies and fouls the water. They do look fantastic as houseplants, and some varieties fold...

I didn't say they don't look nice, they are beautiful. After a while though, no matter how gorgeous, I get tired of looking at the same rocks, same driftwood, same structure, done in different ways....
