+1 for ferts. The chemical names are confusing and intimidating to beginners. The different dosing regimens (is it EI and PPS Pro?). The relationship of ferts to lighting/co2.

I didn't think they were diatoms. This is more black than brown and it's not easily wiped away. One of the links also suggests Otto's would eat it which mine show no interest in. I don't see holes.
