The substrate in my 55g was actually inert black diamond blasting sand with some home made root tabs that I used. The depth of the pool filter sand is about the same as the black diamond sand I used...

Dry ferts are absolutely the way to go in a high light tank. You can get a combo pack of dry ferts from green leaf aquariums which will last you a long time.

It's not surprising. Aquariums are bacteria laden cess pools filled with rotting food and poo. Not that it matters to me one bit. You don't develop an immunity without exposure :)

It really depends on the dimensions of your tank. Offhandedly I would say use 2 fewer bulbs and switch at least 2 or 3 to 6500k
