No, no priming, the pump is at the bottom of the canister. Also, it automatically turns it self off every 24hrs for one minute to let the gasses that build up in the canister out.

I accualy didn't use a "cord" I have mine wired into relays to work with my auto water fill and cleaning system i built. But 14 gauge (15Amp) cord will be best.
