The scales are a bit pine cone. Try feeding a peas and soak it in a bath of epson salt for a few minutes. It's a laxative. Not sure of the concentration. Try a table spoon in a gallon of water.

If there's no nutrients in the soil but in the water, a plant like crypt will grow roots out of the substrate and into the water...

You can't glaze it like real pottery.
It should be fine unglazed. It's the same material as pvc. Oven bake gets rid of the chemical that keeps it soft.

I wouldn't worry about the pH in this case now that I think about it. Get a tds meter. It's about $20.

TDS is more important for you to match for your SA fish.

I think they do sell tds & ph...

What pumps are you getting? You can get peristaltic pumps fairly cheap. They're accurate and won't allow back flow.

You can use those fancy fertilizer calculators to figure out the dosing.

The easiest solution is more RO and less tap. The tannic acid is neutralized by your tap so you probably won't see any change.
