Ended up getting an Eheim 2217. I can't say that it's completely silent, but it is so much better. Should have done this way sooner.

My roselines never bothered anyone, TBH. I had them in a tank with neons, some SAE's, a betta, and everyone got along fine. I don't know if rasboras are supposed to be different from neons, though.

They both did very well, although the one in the 100 G is reaching the end of it's life at this point. They get used to the filter...

Thanks for all the help. I will deifnitely keep the Eheim classic 2217 in mind, but in the meantime I just draped the canister with some towels.

What about putting dirt under the black diamond to give the plants an extra kick? Cheap, and you don't need to go for expensive substrate.
