You'll probably need one of those stainless steel intakes to protect your shrimp. Eheim's intake strainer is definitely wide enough to suck up baby shrimp.

Thats weird, in my tank it was the opposite. My dwarf sag thrived and all my vals melted. I guess that explains why my vals didn't work out.

You can just use fish food, that is what I used....

You can just use fish food, that is what I used. However, ammonia is cleaner and easier to measure out the amount you need.
