I saw some 'full spectrum' CFLs at the hydroponics store so I think I'll give those a try. 23W 6400k bulbs by Sunblaster I believe.

Have you cleaned the impeller magnet shaft? Pull the impeller out (carefully) and use a toothbrush to clean it. Rinse it off and put it back together.

I thought I saw someone use akadama inside a wabi kusa online. Turface is extremely similar, as well as cheaper ($20 for a 50 lb bag). I use it for bonsai as well and it seems to work great for that...
