Get yourself a rich organic substrate like dirt or Eco complete. The bacteria will provide enough co2 for your plants plus the benefit of nutrients.

The long fin gene is pretty common in all fish. With enough in-breeding, you'll get long fins.

I've noticed my male brightens up when the lights are out. I think intense light stresses them out so the red is washed out. Let you water lily grow floaters so the tank can get cover.
