Whenever my fish or shrimp jump, it is also at night when lights are out (even though I have moonlights). I've never picked up a dried up fish in the day time.
I think they are definitely spooked...

Just don't over feed and have food fall to the substrate, give them a couple of days, then they will get hungry, and learn that food is on the water surface.
It will always take the fish a little...
