Haha, that is really cool, it works fine. Mine never rotates, but yours is rotating probably due to the water current from your outlet, since it is so close to the skimmer.

With a planted tank, you don't have to worry about vacuuming waste too much, the waste will be broken down and used as fertilizer for the plants.

I'd say 1 part bleach, 10 parts water should be fine. Rinse it a couple of times, some people will then do a final soak with dechlorinator.

I think they are definitely spooked...

I think for 10G, the 8 lb bag will be enough to get you around 2-3 inches of soil depth. You can always get a 8lb and 4lb just to be sure.
