Best cory sand has a grain size of 0.4-0.8 mm. and rounded grains :-) Then it is safe for them to filter the sand through their gills.

Do a pwc to get the nitrite down, then dose ammonia again up to around 3 ppm. Repeat as necessary.
When you can do that and come out with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite after 24 hrs, the tank is cycled.
