My avatar is an "unknown shrimp" that I bought.. he grew to about 5 inches and didn't take well to my non-aggressive tank. Definitely keep an eye on them ;)

I have 2 in my 33 gallon tank and they definitely leave my plants alone. I have a large piece of driftwood covered with Java Moss, and they nibble on it, but they only seem to be taking off the stuff...

My rotala definitely changes to the light...

My rotala definitely changes to the light conditions as well. If they've been getting good light they will turn from green to red very quickly.

Yeah, the way that most stores have the stem plants tightly bundled is not the way that you want to plant them. Give them a little room between each other and they'll grow in much better.

You may also want to try spreading out the plants a bit more. It looks as though you have some tight bunches which will make it difficult for the bottoms to get light and therefor die.

Make sure you get some driftwood for the bristlenose. They'll be much happier with a log to suck on. 4 of them may be a bit too much for a 30 gallon tank, especially one just starting with no algae...
