You just need to be patient. You could put some extra sponges/bioballs/etc. in to give bacteria some extra surface area.

Shrimp are more sensitive. What has algae on it? Can you take out the plants and/or hardscape items and dip in a separate container and then wash off?

I wanted to avoid clown loaches because of the size they can get. I agree they are awesome but not right for this tank right...

Well I hadn't done much in the past 3 weeks and it was out of control...just trimmed a ton!

Also removed all the xmas moss for now.
