Everyone keeps suggesting anoles, but they really are not a good beginner pet. For one, they either need a UVB bulb (which has to be replaced often and can be expensive) or supplemented with Vit D3...

Maybe put down some better substrate (Eco-Complete or Flourite or something) and then layer some blue gravel over it? That way you still get the blue gravel but the plants get better root-feeding...

Actually, I think it's that Vivariums have animals in them, whilst Terrariums just have plants. Don't think there's anything about climate in there.
