Thanks for the info so far. Always open was refering to the fact that I don't shut it off at night so yes it runs 24/7. The reason I don't turn it off at night is to avoid the ph swings everyday...

I work a late shift and would prefer to have a photo period of 6PM-1AM. The tank is in a room that gets almost no sunlight. Any adverse affects on plants or fish like this? Its a high light tank.

I would put about 3-4 handfuls on a fine screen, over a bucket, and gently spray a garden hose on it and run ur hands thru it a lil bit. Best way I've found so far.
