Awesome regarding your sprouting leaves :) Your Java Fern will thrive with its roots anchored in the open, like to a piece of wood or rock. They don't like having their roots buried.

Depends on the soil really, because I've seen some that needed to be fertilized right away. You can also burn your plants with to much. So if your soil came pretty rich you might want to be careful...
