Not sure who first thought of this but I got it from Tom Barr. When he had to trim his HC he was using a paint scraper and just chiseled a cut into the grass through the substrate all the way down...

I haven't dove far enough in to say which SPS would be easier than the others but I do know that if you do go for them stability is the key. With a smaller tank the numbers for ALK-MAG-CAL change...
