yeah i had the exact same problem as you, bought gravel, had loads of stones. I removed them all and it was a lot easier. Sand stone must be ok but you dont know for sure unless you get it tested....

I know from experience that algae is a nightmare if you apply high light to alkaline tanks, because they are better with bicarbonates.
