I can't get java moss to behave in ANY conditions. It's a pain. It never does what I want and it tangles around my other plants and clogs my filters.

That's what I thought, that at least the calcium will prevent their shells from being eaten away. If anything, the calcium doesn't hurt them so I'll just continue to add it.
