I just use my canisters as big reactors. Does not work with all canister filters, but if it does, nothing beats the convenience, performance and reliability of just bubbling into the inlet.

Green water happens frequently with new tanks. Best IMO is to wait it out, you can't dilute it via water changes. Let it grow really thick, and then, a few days later, it will clear up and be gone...
