There is no easy way to clean an HMF, but as zach suggested you can try a gravel vacuum across the front.

really the best way I would suggest is to remove most of the water into another bucket....

its more trouble than its worth. you really have to pay attention to your water parameters because you dont have a substrate to help stabilize.

maybe a split tank is a better idea.
