I have irises that I have been keeping in my 9 gallon pond and they are simply planted in a plastic pot with stones lining the bottom to keep dirt from falling out the holes.

I had an awesome piece of grapevine that looked like a tree when I tied java fern to it. It slowly rotted in a couple of years. I sadly gave up on it and got a different kind of wood.

Sounds like you need to borrow a worm eating critter for a little while like a turtle or tadpoles.

I would go to a lfs that houses bettas in the tanks with other fish and pick the most docile one. Buying one online may get you an aggressive fish who will kill tank mates.
