Ok I got a photo id of the fish off of another forum. It's an African knifefish and online care sheets say they require a heavily planted tank so maybe putting it in the 55g planted isn't a bad idea...

It's either blind as a result of poor water conditions in its old home (a group of kids dropped it off for adoption) or it's permanently blinded and I can at least give it a better quality of life.

What would be the safest way to add water to a tank that is in dry start? I have a carpet of HC and pygmy chain swords behind those and don't want to uproot them when adding the water.
