You can just take them to the post office.. they can revise the date on the labels if they feel like they are too old to mail, but most of the time if they are off by a couple of days they don't care.

In my experience they all work fine for general prevention if you don't have fleas, but if you have a full on infestation they do very little to help, especially if you have a neighbor with fleas...

It will take it a week or so to start to poke through... probably 3-4 weeks to start to fill in if everything is good for growth. Trimming it at that point will help it branch out more.
