They didn't force me into buying anything, but the tank was a cheap impulse buy from a supermarket...although the lady at the fish store did say to not worry about cycling the tank- pretty scary :P...

after the advice I've had on here I'm now doing 40% Bretta-filtered water changes twice a day, the Nitrite and Nitrate levels have dropped right down and I'll keep them...

thanks all for the replies, I was expecting a lot of overstocked shoutings :(

I'm upgrading to a much bigger tank soon which should hopefully solve the problem; the new one is 30" x 15" x 12" ...
