As far as dwarfs go, I'm a big fan of bolivian rams. Very attractive and personable fish. Supposedly easier to keep than GBR's. I have 6 and they don't bother plants at all.

You can also bake the wood in your oven. Set it at about 180 and leave the wood in there for a few hours. Obviously keep an eye on it but at that low temp it shouldn't burn.
