It won't be "impossible" to use. Just directly on top of the tank. According to Hoppy's chart, if you suspend the light 12 inches above the tank you will be in the "medium-ish" range.

When I moved from my 29 to my 75 I moved all of my old EcoComplete to the new tank and added 4 more bags on top of it.

Combined with water from the old tank I had no issues getting everything...

one of the things to remember with a drop checker...

one of the things to remember with a drop checker is it's about two or so hours behind what your tank is actually at. (If I'm remembering right - correct me if I'm wrong!)
