I've had them be slightly blue due to the algae they were eating. If their body was cloudy then I think it's a bacterial infection. Right now some of mine have a slight rosy hue to them.

I don't think you'll have a problem with it. I accidentally dropped a golf ball size rock from about 17 inches high and the bottom glass was fine. Definitely clenched my butt for a second.

You can sand blast it or hit it with sand paper. You could try to use a drill with a wire brush attachment, although I've never tried it before.
