That is pretty low. If I had a tank on the bottom of my stand I would have maybe 4 to 5 inches. One inch is not a lot of room to play with.

If you pull those stems off from as close to the bottom of the stalk as you can grip (with fingers or tweezers) it will usually pull cleanly out. Like yanking a hair out of your arm.
