I might be wrong but that could be from the nerite snails. I put some in my tank full of Anubias and they chowed down. Looks kinda similar to my experience.

Cryptocoryne Spiralis makes for a good background low light plant and gets tall. Go with a crypt theme just make sure to add some root tabs if using gravel or sand.
