These were quite famous amongst hobbyists when frozen stuff wasn't too popular. They are allegedly very nutritious.

I experienced something similar with my Boraras...

I experienced something similar with my Boraras brigittae. The cause was low O2 levels in the tank.
Fish would get slow and would come to the surface to gulp O2 and get sucked in the skimmer.

You're right about land plants sucking up a lot of N from the water column. In my case there won't be any water. It'll jsut be soil and plants growing in high humidity....
