What kind of substrate for 7+ inches deep?

Maybe use egg crate or lava rocks or other rocks to help build the slope so it's not all substrate and they may help the slope retain it's shape.

A lot of the sponge filters come with a tall tube. Would it still be effective if the tube was cut?

I would like a large sponge filter, in a relatively small aquarium for good grazing surface...

Will Seiryu stone affect your water parameters though? I like the look of them, but was always concerned about the increase in TDS, though I'm not sure if that's a fact or just an assumption.
