Visiting Orlando/Lakeland area

I'm planning a trip down in late March for some spring training games and wondered if there were any really really nice stores I should stop into while I'm in the area.

waterfaller1 02-23-2009 02:29 PM

Nope, unless you are into saltwater..but you can come for a visit!

MrJG 02-23-2009 05:46 PM

ahhhh booo. :(
Seriously is there nothing around?

monkeyruler90 02-23-2009 06:18 PM

Yeah, there aren't any good shops. I think in lakeland there are a few fish farms, some might even let you buy wholesale stuff. What day in march? We can probably meet up and trade some plants if you want.

Oh and waterfaller1, is it still cool if I come see your grindal worm colony?

It'll be last week in march when I'm coming down but its doubtful that I'll be able to do any trading but I'll see what pans out as we get closer to time to leave.

The fish farms are not open to the general public. You have to have a store and license to purchase. I am in contact on occasion with the one guy in Lakeland who plans on doing some retail along with his wholesale once he gets everything set up. He is the one I got the zebra otos from. About the only 'odd' freshwater fish store, and I mean odd as opposed to your box stores like Petco, are in the Casselberry {Pet Safari & Pet Bazar}and Altamonte Springs{Fishy Business-jerk owner} area. There is one in Kissimmee too, called Aquaholics. One in Winter Park{Ocean Blue..does have some fw supplies and plants}I would not recommend any of them as a 'really nice store'. Now if you were going to the Tampa area, there is a store there that is supposed to be really nice, and one plant farm that does sell to the public on certain days, and the plants are supposedly extremely reasonable. While you are in Lakeland, if you just are looking for something to do, there is a big store there called Nolan's. It's all saltwater, but he does have some outside ponds with saltwater fish, corals, anemones, if you just feel like 'being around fish' lol.:hihi:
And of course here in Orlando, the best saltwater store is Sea In The City, where I used to work.

This is why I buy all my plants from you guys, and my fish from Frank in NY.

Sure it is fine to come and see the grindals...just give me a few days notice.:icon_smil

Waterfaller, out of curiosity, which is the really nice fish store in the Tampa Bay area?

waterfaller1 03-01-2009 06:16 AM

One is called Marine Warehouse, the other is in Seffner{for plants} called Everglades Nursery ~aquaticplantdepot.com off 301 and I-4. The second place is supposedly super cheap.

I was in Marine Warehouse on Saturday. They've got a nice selection of fish and a decent selection of plants (nothing out of the ordinary) but do be careful to QT any fish you may pick up- I saw ich and some other issues in their tanks.

Hungry Wendigo 03-03-2009 05:27 PM

Ah, it was Marine Warehouse you were talking about. It does have a reasonable plant selection, although I'll be damned if any of the employees know anything about keeping a planted tank. But Laura's right, you'd need to QT any fish bought there, and you'd also want to check the plants for snails.

I thought you were much further south, Laura. Isn't that quite a long drive for you?
