UG care

Hi

I have been meaning to try UG for a while now but there is pretty limited information on the internet about this plant. If any of you have any personal information about keeping it like specific requirements, please feel free to chime in.

Thanks!!

Light, water, nutrients, lots of C02.
Soft water preferably.

I trim/mow mine at least monthly.
That's about it, anything specific you were looking for?

Can you plant the trimmings?

WfxXx 08-26-2008 04:19 AM

Not usually no, UG growth is via runners, so occasionally
you get the stray runner growing above, you can replant
that.
The usual trim/mow is just like cutting grass, leaves
everywhere, mow it just before water change, net out
as much as possible, then water change gets the rest.

I finally got my UG to take off in my shrimp tank and now I'm fighting hair algae in it. Such a pain. I have almost pulled all my UG out trying to remove the hair algae. Now I've put about 15 amanos in there. Hopefully they will be able to be more selective than I can. I sure hope they take care of it. This was about the 4th or 5th time I have tried this stuff and was finally successful - just to be foiled by the hair algae! ARGG!!!

How soft are we talking? Like a kH of 4 or 5?

My tap is KH4, medium soft, so I can't say how well it grows
in anything above that, I presently grow it in RO.

i had 75 in a 90, and they ate the tips and stunned the growth

i had about 5 in a 90 they still ate it but it grew too fast, alot of the tips were chewed tho

Mine is growing fine in hard water, 8KH/16GH.

UG is just a little hard to get established in a tank. Emersed grow is much easier.

my amanos must be well trained. I have several algae eaters in the tank including SAE's and nerite snails. I just inspected the UG and none of it shows signs of being chewed at all.

Is there any specific fertilizer UG benefits from. . .like iron?

fishboy87 08-29-2008 02:19 AM

Oh and I'd also like to see some pics of your UG carpets and if you could list the tank specs like lighting and ferts and whatnot, that would be great!!! Thanks

For what it is worth, the UG in my tank is growing steadily while my HC has all but died. It really doesn't seem to be all that difficult a plant, the biggest challenge has been training it to send it's runners under the substrate.
