Looks like you're off to a nice start!

Probably won't need the heater unless your tank water gets down into the 50s on a regular basis. Shrimp do well in cool water.

Thanks! I've got the heater so I might as well keep it in. It can get pretty cold here in the winter but not that cold!

Is cool water better though?

My 10 gal used to use exactly all of your equipment in this picture. I dont know about others but my red cherry shrimp prefer cooler water. My heater is not on and the tank is 72-78 coldest would be 70. And they breeding like crazy and none jumped out like when it was 82s

kcoscia 10-27-2013 04:55 PM

That seems to be the range with my heater. Hmm. I guess I will leave it in. I just worry about the nights, since it does get quite cold in my room.

Yep, shrimp do better in cooler water. Since you have no fish, there's no need for a heater unless your tank dips into the 50s regularly.

I'd say high 60s/low 70s is ideal for shrimp.

You could try it with and without this winter to see what works best for you.

kcoscia 10-27-2013 08:32 PM

Worth a try to go without, especially since I don't even have shrimp yet. I can see how low it really gets.

kcoscia 11-01-2013 08:18 PM

KH 0 (okay that's alight)
GH 0-1 not okay

HSA1255 11-01-2013 08:30 PM

Yay! Shrimp are going to be so happy in there.

I remineralize with a GH+ product. Do you have one?

kcoscia 11-01-2013 08:40 PM

I'm working on that right now. Trying to find which to buy. I'm thinking the Ultimate GH Booster from GLA

What do you think?

kcoscia 11-02-2013 01:07 AM

pulled the trigger on the ultimate GH booster!

also, I think I have nematoads. Since my dual sponge is shipping from china I think and wont be here until mid november, I'm going to get a few otos when I'm ready!

kcoscia 11-03-2013 08:56 PM

I'm adding the heater back in bc I would like to have a small group of oto cats with my shrimp.
This should be okay right?
