New Project - ADA Style Journal
I've been into this hobby for like 5 years now, but just getting back after
2 years out of it.
I've always been a big fan of ADA works and now I want to start a project
Down here in Brazil imported stuff are veeeeery expensive and we only have
one place that represents ADA. So itīs very hard to find their products here.
To start, about 2 weeks ago (it takes about 4 to get ready) I ordered a tank (looks like ADA, itīs rimless but itīs not crystal clear) size 60 x 35 x 35 (I'm gonna use meter ok?)
And on the next day, I got an Eheim Ecco 2234 canister from Cobasi (it's like Pet Smart), a Jebo overhead lightining and a CO2 Set from Ista (1 liter).
I'm gonna put the prices on the top of the pics, so you guys can have an idea
of how expensive things are down here. Just divide it by 2 and you'll get dollar amount.
R$ 300,00 (that was kind of cheap, it usually runs around R$ 500,00)
R$ 150,00 (got it from second hand, it runs around R$ 500,00)
R$ 570,00 (the store had it on sale, they're not gonna sell Eheim anymore, so this runs around R$ 700,00)
To be continued...
What I've been doing for the last 2 weeks is let the canister run on a bucket, so it will do a fishless cycle and speed up the process (I'm adding NH3 to it).
So you guys can have an idea, these are the tanks I had on the past...
What always had me down was the size of the tanks (too small, the cube is 30
x 30 x 30) that always limited my work.
Last week, I got this:
R$ 60,00 (I think itīs about the price anywhere around the world)
So yesterday I had some stuff to return to Cobasi (Pet Smart like) and with the credit I got an Eheim Ecco 2232 for R$ 510,00 (again, this is not the real price, Eheims are on sale).
I'm gonna run it in serie with my Ecco 2234. I always think that overfiltration is never a bad idea.
Here's how I set this up.
I put the 2232 on the inflow and the 2234 on the outflow.
I'm not sure how Iīm gonna set the filtration order on these.
Should I put the blue sponge at the bottom of the 2232 then add a little
Eheim Substrate Pro and on the 2234 add the rest of the Substrate at the bottom and some activated carbon at the top (I'm gonna have carbon for at least 3 weeks)?
Finally I went to the ADA distributor and got a few hardscape items:
Any idea of what kind of rock are these? (it looks like Dragon Stone)
look all the mess...luckily that's my spare office...LOL

Petsmart in the US don't have EHEIM canister filters.
Your nano tanks look so fantastic!!!
Ok, so we don't have ADA Stands down here in Brazil, so I'm gonna have to
get one made (as close as possible to the original stand).
This is what I'm gonna have for mine (all black).
But I still have to wait for the tank to get ready, so I can confirm the measures.
So now I look forward to hear what you guys think about my project.
Am I at the right track?
Iīve seen a lot o people saying they got theirs from Pet Smart :icon_eek:...and at least online they do have it...I just checked it...
Your previous tanks look great. It looks like you're doing a good job of selecting "clean" looking equipment to look like ADA. Looks great!
What's the advantage to running the two filters in series? I've never seen that done.
Running filters in series is a very common practice in Japan, started by Takashi Amano.
The idea is to have as much possible area for the bacteria to grow.
In japan, is very common to see a small tank with 16 liters of biological media on it.
So, first of all, the advantage to have 2 (or more) canister is: Maintenance. You can clean a filter per month and you still giving time for the bacteria to stabilize in the other canister.
Second of all, on a planted tank you want less water movement, so you don't mess with the plants co2 absorption, otherwise you could just put the 2 canisters running separately on the same tank (but 4 pipes inside a tank wouldn't loo too great on a ADA style tank).
Take a look at the link below, itīs from Eheim Japan...
If, like me, you don't understand anything at all (LOL), do a little google translating...
Hope it helps.
Thank you for the detailed reply! I'm going to investigate this more.
50 days later...
That looks great!
how about a closer pic and a plant list?, looks awesome
