Spontaneous generation of java ferns?
Hi everyone. I have a branch of manzanita that I tied moss to and it all of the sudden, there are a few small ferns growing on it. Is it possible that some have ferns managed to colonize it?
I do have a java fern that fell off my rock and grabbed the gravel, but there are three or four ferns growing on my branch. Definitely. Java ferns. I'm thinking that I might have pulled some of the rhizome off of the large fern when tying on the moss?

Very possible. I've had tiny 1/8" shreds from a java fern rhizome put out new leaves after they settled from the parent plant being literally ripped out of the tank. And if you've ever had plantlets growing from the parent plants leaves, these can detach and get blown around the tank without growing much at all until they latch onto a good spot and settle in.

I've noticed that fissidens has shown up on a piece of wood far from any other, and not from a loose strand. I suppose it is possible that they release spores.
