Living in HI do I need a heater?
Just wanted to know if people here in Hawaii use a heater for tropical tanks or not. I don't, and during the summer I noticed that my tank's temp was running at about 79-80 degrees, but currently it's closer to 75 on average. After noticing this recently I'm definitely thinking of getting heaters for my tropicals so the temp is more stable. Plus I know my higher temp fish would appreciate this (bettas, GBR, etc). Any thoughts?

Depends if you keep some SA species perhaps, most species however, no.

Aloha Morbo,

Depending on where you live and what you're raising, you probably won't need a heater. I have, in the past used heaters when I was raising/breeding Discus. I needed to get the water temp up for them to be happy.

Best of luck!

I don't use one and all my tanks are outside. Durning the winter the water temps were in the mid 60's and during the day it went into the high 70's. I have a couple of betta's, bosemani, turquios, red rainbows, threadfin rainbows, scarlet badis, rasbora's, and a lot of guppies and they were fine. I do keep a heater just incase of an ich episode.

Cool, thanks. I understand that it definitely seems silly to use a heater for tropical fish in a tropical climate, but some parts of Hawaii definitely get cooler than a lot of non-Hawaii residents understand. Needless to say I want to provide the best possible environment for my fish! :)
