Little Shop of Pets. Portsmouth, NH

Doing some searching on other sites, I found this shop mentioned as one of the best places in the Northeast to get corals.

Anyone know if they have a good freshwater selection?

I'll try and stop by there sometime over the next month or so and report back.

There was a shop in a plaza not too far from the Route 1 rotary (State Liquor Store area) that I frequented in the mid-late 80's. It was the first place that I ever found anubius plants, and they had three species, at a time when no one knew what they were. I can't remember the name of the place but I always set aside time to stop there when I would be driving back to MA. It was near a grocery store, a Victory I think, but since that chains been sold I don't know what it might be.

turbowagon,

I live in Rochester, used to live in Portmouth. Little Shop of Pets is nothing to write home about. They normally don't have anything too exciting as far as freshwater goes, occasionally they will get Kribensus or something like that. They don't have much at all in the ways of plants. You are better off stopping at Pet Quarters in Newington for plants. Even then there is not too much exotic.

If you are looking for healthy fish, I would keep going south to Salisbury Aquarium in MA. The guy seems knowledgable and has decent stock.

They USED to be one of the best places to get corals. They moved last year, and severely downsized. They still have fish tanks, but stock is pretty limited.

If you're looking for freshwater fish (cichlids especially) you should take a trip to Zoo creatures in Plaistow NH. I couldn't tell you if they have plants or not.

They don't have many decent plants to write home about. Maybe when they get a fresh shipment in...but when I've gone in poking around they were a little sad looking. They do have nice selections as far as driftwood. 5.99 a pound...

I haven't been to any LFS that has a good selection when it comes to aquatic plants or plant supplies. Seems it's a little too much of a specialized niche around here for the stores to carry the good stuff. I get most of my plants and supplies off the internet and have had good luck with it. Haven't had much luck with ordering fish over the internet yet though.

I've found that some of the smaller non-chain stores tend to have the more knowedgble people, at least if the owner is working there.

I find it odd that there are so many people, in the aquarium trade for a living that know so little about what they are selling.

It's bad when I have to teach the person working at the store how to tell the sex of Livebearers. If I ask for a SAE or Cherry Shrimp or Ammano Shrimp, they have not only never heard of them, but have no clue where to get them.

This month I'm gonna try to make it to the New Hampshire Aquarium Society meeting for the 1st time, hopefully I'll meet some other local people in the same boat as me wanting to trade fish and plants they can't find anywhere.
