Sorry Gold Fish

So I went to a fair last year and my 3 year old kid caught some gold fish playing one of the carnival games. We took the two fishes home but didn't have anything to put them in. I put them in a large jar and went to walmart to find a more suitable home for them. At the time I didn't know anything about fishes so I bought a 1 gallon hex tank with a crappy filter. I put the fish in there and two days later the fish were dead. Sorry. I know ignorance is no excuse. I feel horrible.

So I was stuck with a empty 1 gallon fish tank. Not wanting the tank going to waste I bought a female betta from petco. This is when I started to actually read about how to properly keep a fish and learned about cycling tanks etc. I did daily water changes and stuck in some Anacharis. The betta still didn't seem too happy so one week later I told my wife I was gonna get a 15 gallon. That is how got into this hobby.

I think that's how many people start out. The smart ones keep going after the fish dies and try to solve the problem instead of just doing the same things over and over expecting better results (madness?). Sometimes you have to make the tough mistakes to learn right?

I know I had a goldfish in a bowl as my first pet at age 6. Ironically she lived for a year in that bowl, died only when my dad sprayed for bugs one weekend. But I loved that fish, so now here I am years later with a much better grasp of fish-care. In fact I still love goldies, so now I have 4 of them in a nice 50g pond in the backyard ;)
An I pamper them like they are puppies =x

I work at a LFS and I see this all too often. Many people, unfortunately, learn the hard way. I've dealt with many "carnival goldfish" horror stories which usually end in a crying kid and a frustrated, confused parent (with a bit of guilt). I wish I could say that everyone learns from their mistakes with this situation but I'd be a liar. Some learn, some refuse to listen to our screams that a goldfish CANNOT live in a bowl and do it anyway, only to come back a week later and ask 'why?'. Rarely you'll get someone come in who knows what goldfish need and have an adequate tank/ pond to support them. Anyway, kudos for you for doing your do-diligence and researching later on. Not everyone learns so easily. :)

This is pretty much exactly my story too. If you read the betta journal in my signature you can see the parallels :-)

I feel guilt when I throw out a plant trimming haha.

In this day of easy internet access I just can't really buy the excuse of " I didn't know any better".
