Mandarin shrimp

Not sure if this has been discussed, but I was on another forum (blasphemy) and the name popped up. I have never heard of them I assume it is just another name for a Neo shrimp.

Gracias,

For some reason it looks like a Propinqua......
It's highly suspicious that liveaquaria would have something that we haven't seen yet lol.

Bluek24a4 01-22-2013 02:07 AM

Looks like a regular Orange/Pumpkin Neo to me.

Knotyoureality 01-22-2013 02:08 AM

Hard to tell in some cases, but where it can be pinned down, "mandarin" usually ends up being caridina propinqua. Or as AZGardens for some inexplicable reason calls them "orange halo shrimp".

mordalphus 01-22-2013 02:13 AM

Yep its what used to be called caridina propinqua, I forgot its new name. It's just a low form breeder that require salt water for its breeding like amano

wicca27 01-22-2013 02:15 AM

the pic didnt come up for me but if its propinqua they get good sized for a dwarf shrimp and live a long time i have had mine little over 2 years now

Knotyoureality 01-22-2013 02:50 AM

The non-breeding bit has made them a favorite of mine, especially in my smaller planted vases where a breeding population would cause maintenance problems. Tough little buggers, too. I've had several jumpers out long enough to get a bit crisp around the edges pull thru and thrive after being dumped back in.

In the description it states:
"Similar to other Neocaridina shrimp, the Mandarin Shrimp offers the invaluable service of cleaning aquariums of algae and organic debris. "

So maybe it's a Neo.

wicca27 01-22-2013 11:32 AM

no it has a hump at the start of the tail neo's dont have that. its like the hump some ghost shrimp have

So is anyone going to write and tell them? :p

dougolasjr 01-22-2013 02:17 PM

I thought if it was on the internets it had to be true.

Kitsune_Gem 01-22-2013 10:35 PM

It's labeled as Neocaridina sp.
My first thought was a Pumpkin of some sort.

dougolasjr 01-22-2013 10:39 PM

That picture made me laugh. The kids face is priceless
