Looks like thread (hair) algae. Thrives where leaves are breaking down, leaching nutrients and feeding the algae. Or so I hear... :-)

What plant is that? Looks like it's buried quite deep.

hsilive 01-21-2013 12:05 AM

it is vallisneria (itallian corckscrew)

hsilive 01-21-2013 12:06 AM

well a little algae is not too bad will it kill the plant ?

Aquatic Delight 01-21-2013 01:32 AM

no it won't excatly kill the plant, since those leaves look like they are already dead.

this is a good site about various algaes

hsilive 01-21-2013 02:29 AM

hmm i hope they are not dead that was only one day after shiping ! they did freeze in the mail but havent went dark yet !

give it a while. Ive had vals in winter 40F ish water. they can spring back to life

hsilive 01-21-2013 03:45 AM

i sure hope so ! and it was close to zero when i pulled them out of the mailbox ! the heat pack was even frozen !!

Aquatic Delight 01-21-2013 04:17 AM

vals can be pretty tough, i should have clarifed my statement to say that the leaves look dead, they vary well could recover. did you notify that shipper about it?

hsilive 01-21-2013 04:34 AM

i will be ive been very busy i let then thaw in a fishless tank and then placed them asap !

TwoTacoCombo 01-21-2013 05:32 AM

vals need to be planted with the crown (the part the roots connect to) slightly above the substrate. I'd snip off all but one leaf then replant them shallower, so they can have a fighting chance..

hsilive 01-21-2013 05:19 PM

thanks for the info i dont think i will uproot them but i will pull them up and out a little !
ive placed hoods from two of my 5g tanks on the sides of my edge to give them some better lighting for now as well ! seems to be helping

Jeffww 01-21-2013 05:50 PM

Leaving them floating is probably the best option really.

hsilive 01-21-2013 08:05 PM

what do you mean floating ?
