Can anybody tell me about this driftwood?
 

Could anybody possibly tell me what kind of driftwood this is...? Because I don't really know, it wasn't marked. The guy just gave me a price for it, 15 bucks. which i thought was pretty reasonable. Could be Mopani wood? It looks like it to me, but I've never really seen one of this color or shape

You know I have a piece similar to yours. It is not as rounded as yours but does gave that reddish tone to it, and it does not sink! The guy I bought it from said he had it in his tank for 2 years weighed down and also floating and it never sunk. Heres a couple pics, curious myself to see what type of pieces you and I have.

Mopani typically has a two-tone grain to it and never floats, it's quite dense.

Looks like a cypress root maybe? Not sure.

Is cypress not good for fish?

I've really never seen Mopani wood float. And this one isn't floating at all.

Another weird thing is with this wood... I've had it in the cointainer I usually soak driftwood in since yesterday, and weird... it's not leaching any tannins at all.

it looks very much like a piece a friend gave me for my tank. it was left overs from a pet shop he had many years ago, the tag had reptiles on it, it was very dry pourous and brittle and crumbling, it went in the trash instead of my tank....oh well, it was the thought that counted and it was sweet for him to think of me.

So your tellin me this might not be safe for my tank? :( and it did feel kinda crumbly.... It didn't have any tag on it

Not sure but it might be grapevine, I doubt it would hurt anything but will break down faster than hardwoods.

I threw mine out because I felt with it being crumbly it would possibly only go mushy and could perhaps leach a lot of tanins to stain my water. the piece I had was not worth the time or effort it would take to cure the wood to find out.
I dont believe it would hurt my fish or plants

My policy is : if you can easily break pieces off with your fingers, you shouldn't put it in water.

It looks a lot like what I bought as african root wood, but it is very solid and did leach tannins into the water. (when I was leaching it)

The second piece looks like cedar, If you have a drill drill a small hole in the bottom and you should be able to smell the cedar smell. I have had cedar in my tanks forever, does leach tannins and will deteriorate over time.
