I dont recall where I saw it, but IIRC, the use of peat filtration and/or Blackwater Extract affects the standard calculation of CO2 concentration, which can normally be obtained if pH and KH are known. I am converting a 29 gal to a blackwater biotope, and am going to use Kent Black Water Expert to achieve the proper conditions.
Is there an easy way to calculate CO2 concentrations when the additive is used, or do I need a CO2 test kit?
This article talks about phosphate buffers throwing off the CO2 calculations, but does not say what to do if there are phosphate buffers in the water (for example from the water supply).
Also, it says nothing about tannic and humic acids, which are used in blackwater set-ups. I assume that any non-carbonate based buffer would throw off the pH-KH-CO2 relationship, but I have not been able to find anything for sure about this.
Tannic and humic acids will throw off the co2 chart as will phosphates including those in your water supply. The only way to use those products and know your co2 level is to get a co2 test kit such as the one lamotte sells.
