Dario dario questions

I'm thinking of putting some scarlet badis in my 10 gallon high tech tank that I will be setting up soon. The other inhabitants will be a school of green neon tetras. The tank will be planted densely with various Rotala species and DHG Belem.

I know that scarlet badis are known as finicky eaters. If I do get them it will be from a local store after they've had them for several weeks, so they should be weaned onto prepared foods by then. How do you guys feed yours? I feed the rest of my fish a combination of NLS and Hikari micropellets, will that be sufficient?

Should I add the badis as the first fish in the tank, or should I establish my school of green neons first? Also, how many should I get? I was thinking just 1-2 males, maybe a female or two if the store can get them in. Are they shrimp-safe?

I feed my Scarlets crushed flake food and they do fine. Though my Badis are F4 and F5+ generation so they've always had crushed flake food to begin with so it's a norm for them. I do treat them to micro worms, scuds, daphinia, black worms, and glass worms too.
As long as your tank is a heavily planted aquarium you should be able to keep 3-4 males in that 10 gal tank. The Scarlets are not shrimp safe so don't plan on keeping shrimp with them. Adult shrimps will be fine but shrimp fry will just be food.

Here's a few clips of my Scarlet Badis:

My F1 Darios won't touch man made foods. They eat frozen brine shrimps and live grindal worms.

I think I will go with 2-3 of them. Should I introduce the scarlet badis to the tank first or should I introduce the green neons first?

What do you want to do?

I'm not sure. I'm afraid that if I introduce the green neons first then the scarlet badis will feel intimidated by them and it will be difficult to get them to eat. In your experience are they a shy fish?

MiniFishRoom 12-30-2012 12:05 AM

All fish are unsure at first when you first introduce them to a new environment. Once they settle in they will be fine.
The Scarlets are not a shy fish so putting them in before or after wouldn't really matter.

Okay, thanks for all the info.

My Scarlet badis will also not eat prepared foods. They will not even eat frozen bloodworms. Live foods is the only choice for mine.

My badis only eat live (microworms, vinegar eels, blackworms). Do not purchase these fish without the expectation that they likely won't eat prepared foods. I've read on too many forums abo them dying because someone thought they would "try" prepared. Even if they have been in the petstore it is likely that they have been eating some time of planaria or other small organisms. Heck, if you get them, I will send you a microworm culture for free if you pay shipping. These little fish have the personality of cichlids and its ashamed when they die because they were not given the proper foods.
