Good start. I would like to try Black Diamond next time.

Thanks. First time with the BD. All my other tanks have PFS. I really like it. The grain size is not as uniform as PFS. I'm hoping it will not compact as much. Ammonia testing at 1 ppm today.

Why did you put those plants in the back in pots?

Gtdad2 01-16-2012 12:24 AM

They'll be removed when the others fill in a bit. Meanwhile, they help suck up nutrients. I ran out of pots and had to use shot glasses for the last two...LOL.

Trust me that banana plant will explode so fast, one night the leaf was small and red and the next it was about the size of my palm.

I'll be watching for that. I've noticed that it is sending roots down into the substrate. It's probably getting ready to blast off. I think the 2 tiger lotus bulbs are gonna get huge as well. I will be moving some of this stuff to my 55g when I get it dirted. I'm hooked on dirt...LOL!

It did it again! now my plant have a new leaf that's growing towards the top of the water, I might have to cut it as I know it will block the light.

Banana plants became a PITA to me here being only a transition stage / form for the plant.
They eventually form a pond lily type of plant with surface leaves as they mature. Once it propagates surface leaves and roots the established plant losses the 'Banana'. They will rot and drop off has been my experience every time. Trimming off the roots and surface leaves will delay this but doesn't stop it.

Interesting...I had not heard this before. Thanks for the info. I think I'll just pitch them in my preformed pond after it starts to warm-up a bit.

I like the banana plant but i really wish that I purchased only one instead of two for my 15 gallon.

Well, after 7 weeks, here is an update. I moved the pots around and added a different filter and some livestock (rcs, otos, and a red ramshorn snail) as a clean-up crew. The tiger lotus has really taken off. I've already had to trim the surface leaves twice to keep them from blocking all the light. Since the photos, I have removed one of the bulbs, split them up in pots, and placed in my 55g pfs only tank. What a mess that made! After a few wc's, it is mostly clean again. I apologize for my poor photography skills. I'm still working on that. The tank is super clear and not as yellow as the pics make it seem.
Thanks for looking!
