Who here is from around the Evansville, IN area?

Is any one on here from around Evansville? If so where is your favorite place to shop for the hobby around here? And how many tanks, and what do you have in them?

My favorite place to shop is Pet Food Center, but Harps and occasionally Aquarium Concepts work too.

10 Gallon:
Fauna:
2 guppies
5 ghost shrimp
Flora:
dwarf hair grass
amazon sword

30 Gallon:
Fauna:
4 pristilla tetras
4 neon tetras
2 guppies
2 pit bull plecos
3 peppered corydoras
Flora:
dwarf hair grass
amazon swords

55 gallon:
Fauna:
1 green severum
1 gold severum
3 firemouth cichlids
3 columbian tetras
1 black skirt tetra
1 sepia tetra
1 common pleco
( This aquarium is a recent addition and I had to take all of the fish from the previous owner and have not had time to rehome any yet.)

I live over in owensboro ky about 45 minutes from evansville. I get all my plants from swap and shop here. I have a 75 gallon discus tank, 10 gallon fire red cherry and crystal red tank, and 5 gallon pearls blue tank. A lot o swords, moss, stems, and ferns.

I live in Owensville, IN. a few miles away up HWY 66. I like the First Ave Pet Food Center. The lady that orders the fish is awesome and will take special orders. The kids that work there are not always helpful and do not know much about the fish. I have even had a young lady too afraid to get a fish out so I had to catch it myself. The big problem I find is nobody carries decent plants and it costs a fortune to have plants shipped.

The Indiana section doesn't seem to be very active in general, at least since I have been on here. For your question, I may be able to answer part of it. I believe FAN is Florida Aquatic Nurseries, which is a large supplier for plants that ships to retailers and other suppliers. That is my best guess on it, so maybe that helps. Sorry, I am far from Evansville though.

Thanks for the info. The lack of planted participation in Southern Indiana sure makes it tough to get my tank going though ! :icon_sad: I think I am going to start with some crypts in the foreground and do a Emerson type start but not sure if I should fully cover the plants or just saturate the substrate. So any info would be helpful . :^)

No problem, hopefully you will be able to find something to get you going. Crypts do well emersed, but I have only grown the tissue cultured wendtii 'green' from petsmart. The growth is much faster with that one emersed for me. I believe that all of the crypt species can grow emersed though.

Anyway, keep the substrate saturated, but not to the point there is standing water or you may encounter cyanobacteria. Then just cover the top with saran wrap to keep the humidity up. Misting daily will help keep the humidity up too. You can establish a nice root system emersed, and you will only lose the leaves when the tank is flooded. Dwarf hairgrass also spreads well emersed, and the same goes for HC if you are looking for something else to grow at the same time.

Here's the root system from a two month old crypt I just submerged from my emersed tub. I have 3 more at the same size or bigger that can be split. The tank is 12 1/2" wide for reference.

Nice indeed OK well I have been looking at the plants at pets-mart so I think I will give it a go. :bounce: Thanks for the comeback . :^)

I just joined the forum. I live in Evansville, and I concur that we don't have very many options when it comes to plants. I have been told several times when asking for plants "I can order those for you". Well, yeah, but so can I, smart guy. Why would I pay you to order them for me?

Anyway, I would love to be part of any shared information for this area. The Owensboro tip was interesting.

Maybe after I've been here a while longer (and gained some rep), perhaps members could even meet and maybe work out some "bulk" purchases and split costs. :red_mouth

I have been getting mine from Pet smart for now , but they are expensive . :icon_cry: I will be either ordering from Illinois, or making a trip to Louisville, when the money allows .:icon_roll
